It was opened in year 2001 to the delight of residents and tourists alike and now attracts an estimated 530.000 guests each year. The creation of the geothermal beach was an ambitious, but very successful, project involving the construction of a lagoon with large sea walls, where cold sea and hot geothermal water fuse together resulting in higher temperatures. The main objective of creating the geothermal beach was to establish the bay of Nauthólsvík as a diverse outdoor area and haven for recreational activities, such as sunbathing, sailing and sea-swimming: the latter is surprisingly popular all year round with people enjoying the use of the hot-tubs, steam-bath and chan...

Then spend a day or two in The Golden Circle, an area which encompasses three of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders; Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Field, and Gullfoss. Iceland’s main ring road strings together an endless series of epic landscapes. Less than two hours drive east of Reykjavik are two of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Continue eastward towards Vík, Iceland’s southern-most village, where you’ll find the dramatic landscapes of Black Beach, Reynisdrangar, and Dyrholaey. Follow the ring road for another two hours into the ethereal light of Jökulsárlón Lake, where icebergs break away from Europe’s largest glacier and float for years before tumbling out to sea. Head north and feel the earth rumble at Europe’s mightiest waterfall, Dettifoss. Then explore the Myvatn region, a tranquil lake surrounded by nature in all its violent beauty. Take a careful walk through the boiling landscape of Namafjall, lose yourself amid the lava pillars of Dimmuborgir, and peer into the caldera of Krafla Volcano. Known as the Capital of the North, Akureyri is the perfect place to warm up and enjoy some creature comforts, before heading off into the wilds again. In Iceland, every side road is a story waiting to unfold. So come, and live your own Icelandic story, it’s one you’ll keep telling for the rest of your days. https://www.expedia.com/Iceland.d79.Destination-Travel-Guides -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Expedia Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/expedia Instagram: http://instagram.com/expedia Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/Expedia/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+Expedia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on our travel blog, Viewfinder: http://viewfinder.expedia.com/

And in no particular order, here are our Top 10 Things To Do: For 900 Krona, you can take the lift to the top of Hallgrimskirkja for unparalelled views over the city. The church has a stark design that’s similar to volcanic basalt columns found in the Icelandic landscape. Laugavegur is the main high street through Reykjavik. It's where you'll find all of the city's best bars, shops and restaurants. There are also several tour operators and a tourist information office along Laugavegur, so it's a good place to start if you plan on taking tours out of the city. We think that the Golden Circle is one of the best tours outside of Reykjavik; taking in Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir National Park. The whole thing can be done in a single day and there are cafes and car parks in each stop. Down by Reykjavik Harbour, the Saga Museum is the place to learn all about Iceland's Viking history. You can even try some authentic armour or go for the faux fur and sword option like me. Don't forget to take the time to wander around the city; it's not very big and it's worth exploring the downtown area to see sights such as the Sun Voyager and the Harpa Concert Hall. Also in the downtown area, Tjornin, also known as 'the pond' is great for a picturesque walk in the summer or some ice-skating when it freezes over in the winter. Iceland's nightlife is legendary and although it may be small, Reykjavik has plenty of places to try. Do bear in mind though, things don't really get started until around 2am. For something a bit different, you can book a lesson at the Elf School to learn all about Icelandic folkelore. The school is run by the enigmatic Magnus Skarphendinsson, one of the world's leading believers in elves and hidden people. The elves are from 2cm, the smallest elves, a Flower Elf. Iceland is one of the best countries for seeing the Northern Lights. They're elusive but persistence will pay off. When I eventually saw them, the colours and sheer vibrancy was something I'll never forget. And finally, what trip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to the Blue Lagoon? This geothermally-heated pool has become Iceland's must-do. Its water reaches up to 38 degrees and its algae, minerals and silica is said to condition and rejuvenate the skin. So those were our top things to do in Reykjavik. If you have any more suggestions or ideas about the things we may have missed, then please comment below and let us know. Travel video about destination Reykjavik in Iceland. Reykjavik is Iceland`s gateway to the world and is one of the smallesThe Hallgrims Kirkja is one of Reykjavik’s main landmarks, a Neo Gothic church that was built between 1945 and 1986. It was named after a famous religious minister and poet of the 17th century, Hallgímur Pétursson. Both its design and large dimensions are impressive. Tjörnin is located in the centre of the city, a wonderful small lake surrounded by spacious parks and the new City Hall is also located there. Krists Kirkja is the city’s main Catholic church and in 1989 the Pope preached within its walls marking the first visit of the Pontificate to Iceland. Narrow elegant bridges span across the splendid ponds of the Botanical Garden, a popular destination for the inhabitants of Reykjavik. However, small forests of conifers are the only real sign of nature on this remote and barren island. Chimneys are a rarity in Reykjavik. The majority of its houses are heated by geothermic water. Indeed, many of its pavements and streets are heated, a convenient asset that saves much money on snow clearance and makes life a lot easier for the local population. In Iceland the summer months are bright but in spring and autumn there are long periods when there is little daylight. July is the time of the famous midnight sun and thanks to the Gulf Stream the island enjoys a relatively temperate climate with cool summers and quite mild winters. Historic sights, hi-tech buildings and the charm of a small town. All this is Reykjavik, a remote metropolis built on fire and ice!t metropolises on Earth. Just over a hundred thousand people live in this the northernmost of all cities that is sometimes referred to as Iceland’s ‘Smokey Bay’.

In addition to soaking and swimming in the pool, the Blue Lagoon offers in-water massage treatments, saunas and steam rooms and access to a cafe. A little bit of paradise is to be found in the form of a golden-sanded geothermal beach at Nauthólsvík in Reykjavík. The main objective of creating the geothermal beach was to establish the bay of Nauthólsvík as a diverse outdoor area and haven for recreational activities, such as sunbathing, sailing and sea-swimming: the latter is surprisingly popular all year round with people enjoying the use of the hot-tubs, steam-bath and changing facilities and showers, even when the water drops below freezing. Cold-water swimming might sound crazy, especially in a country like Iceland, however this extreme activity dates all the way back to the age of settlement. The oldest recorded sea-swimming feat was performed in the year 1030, when Grettir Ásmundarson (of Icelandic Saga legend) swam a distance of 7km across a bay in North Iceland to the island of Drangey. The sea temperature varies from around -1,9°C during the coldest months and around 17°C in the summertime. Average temperatures are between 3°- 5°C in the winter and 12°- 15°C in the summer. The temperature of the sea inside the lagoon itself is higher in the summer, averaging at between 15°- 19°C, due to the geothermal heating. It's also significantly warmer during the winter in opening hours when the overspill from the hot-tubs warm the lagoon. Keep in mind that this also depends on the tide. During high-tide when the lagoon floods temperature differences are negligible. Phone: 511-6630 Netfang: nautholsvik@itr.is www.nautholsvik.is

Visiting Iceland & Not Sure What to Expect? Here we have the Best & Worst of Visiting Iceland for tourists & Travelers. Whether you are heading the fjords, searching for Puffins or enjoying the Blue Lagoon near Reykjavik these 5 Love & Hates should help you enjoy a better tourist experience & adventure in Iceland. 5 Things You Will Love & Hate about Visiting Iceland Hate #1. You will need to rent a car to experience Iceland. The country is sparsely populated and has limited public transport. There are a number of tourist agencies that can help you, but your best bet is to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle and explore Iceland on your own. Hate #2 Lack of accommodation. Iceland is getting better with more guest houses and hotels opening around the country, however the tourist boom has made it tough to find some accommodation during peak summer season so make sure you book early. Hate #3. The distances between gas stations and service areas. Best bet is to have extra food in the car and always top up your gas tank when you can if you are doing the Golden Circle drive all around the island. Hate #4. The temperamental Icelandic weather. Bring layers as even in the summer it can be very cool in Iceland. Also, with midnight sun in the summer and little daylight in winter sleeping times can be a challenge. Hate #5. Iceland is expensive. Food, lodging, etc. can be very expensive in Iceland. Flights are a good deal though. Love #1. The otherworldly beauty of Iceland. Iceland is a travel photographer’s paradise. Waterfalls, glaciers, icebergs, puffins, mountains, fjords, just so much natural beauty. Love #2. The Icelandic People are amazing. The people are very friendly, helpful, speak great English and the country in a whole is very safe. Love #3. Visiting The Blue Lagoon or another Hot Thermal Spa. Iceland has amazing swimming pools and calming hot thermal spas that everyone to Iceland must visit. Love #4. The Amount of Outdoor Activities Available for Tourists.
